Using the File Manager

There is a File Listing page, similar to the Content Listing page, where you can view, add and delete files uploaded to the website. To get to the File Listing page, hover over the “Content” link in the black horizontal navigation bar and click on “Files”. You should see a table listing the files that have been uploaded in the content manager with the following columns: “Title”, “Type”, “Size”, “Author”, “Updated” and “Operations”.

By default the list is sorted in order of most recently “Updated” which is the date that shows when a file was added to or updated in the content manager. You can sort the list by any of the column names by clicking on the name of the column, just like on the Content Listing page. You can click on the filename of an image in the “Title” column to view the image. You also can delete an image by clicking the “Delete” link in the “Operations” column of the row for that image. This should be done with care.

When you click on the filename, you will see the image and three tabs beneath the Image name. You can click on the “Edit” tab if you want to rename the image name or upload another image in place of the current one. You can click on the “Delete” tab to delete the image from the content manager. You can also click on the “Usage” tab to find out where (and if) the image is being actively used on the website.

Clicking on the “Usage” tab will bring up a table listing pages where the image appears on the website. This is useful because deleting an image in the File Manager does not remove the code that may reference that image on individual pages. If a page is depending on an image file, and you delete the file, visitors to the page will find a broken/missing image if they try to view it.

Before deleting any file, you should always go to the “Usage” tab to make sure no pages are referencing the file. If any pages do depend on the file, remove the references to that file from all of those pages first, before deleting the file.
